Babysitters: caution when going to a meeting safety babysitting

Some safety tips.

You are young girl and you just sign up on a site for baby-sitting. After reading all our advice, you have a great profile on the site. Miraculously, you already have a proposal the day after signing up! Be careful, do not let the joy outweigh caution. It is essential that you follow a few simple safety rules.

Be extremely attentive! The web is not frequented by well-intentioned people.

In case of doubt, click the "report" button found on all of the ads and conversations on the site.
Choose carefully the sites on which you register. On some sites your contact details can be directly visible to everyone.

On Top-Nanny, only members of the site can search the ads, and only families who sign-up for a pass can access your number. This greatly reduces the risk. Any visitor activity on the site is registered and we are, in most cases, able to detect suspicious behavior.

Here are some tips that will allow you to go to your first interviews with peace of mind.

1) Precautions to take before the meeting.

You are about to get an interview with parents who have selected your file. You have already exchanged a few emails, everything seems perfect.
Nevertheless, there is no guarantee whether there are actually good honest people on the other side of the keyboard.
So follow these rules:

  • Have a quick phone call in advance, or ask the person to call you if you do not have a pass. On the phone, we get a better sense of who we are dealing with. Or better yet, agree to an interview by webcam. If the family doesn't wishes to spend anything to call you, and you've already agreed on your working terms (availability, rates), be cautious! This is at best a family that is a little tight-fisted (beware of deadbeats), and a person who does not want you his direct number or who is pretending to be someone else.
  • Always tell your at least one of parents of your plans, your phone calls and meetings.
  • If it's a man who responds, asks if you can do the interview with the mother present as well.
  • One of your parents may also take part in the conversation, in order to show him that you are not alone.

2) At the time of the meeting

One word: CAUTION
Everything is done to avoid problems on our site, links to report can warn  us of a suspicious ad or behaviour and all visitor activity is recorded.

Even though they're extremely rare, horror stories have already occurred in the past, fortunately our site that didn't yet exist at the time.
An ad in a newspaper, from website or a poster, it makes no difference; you never can know what to expect. Therefore it's important to be extremely careful.

We prefer to discuss these elements in full transparency. We mustn't fall into paranoia, but a few simple tips are to be followed.

Of course, they only apply if you have parents who are "strangers", if it's babysitting job found by a friend or other recommendation, you can do without!

  • If possible agree for the first meeting to be in a public place. Also ask someone to come with you to the meeting place.
  • Never go to an appointment without notifying a parent of the date, time and address.
  • Do not agree to follow the person to a place other than the initial meeting place, refuse to get in a car.

Rest assured, we've never had any problems reported to us so far. But always keep in mind these safety instructions!
