The calculation of the salary of your home childcare provider
pay childcare assistant

What are the expenses you should expect to pay with the compensation of your licensed nanny?

The salary of your childcare provider is composed of several costs. She is responsible for declaring her revenue and paying the appropriate amount of tax and other social charges.

The rate of your childcare provider may or may not include the different expenses she has to incur, such as food and various supplies. Be sure to inquire what is included in her rates and what the final cost will be per week/month.

The pay for contracted hours

The number of hours

Depending on your care needs during the year, you will determine an annual quota hours you'll divide by 12 to smooth out your nanny salaries approved. The calculation of the approximate monthly payments will be multiplied by the hourly rate.

Hourly rates

Pay rates must be agreed upon by you and your childcare provider. Usually she already has a set rate but she may have some wiggle room. Most home childcare providers give daily rates, but you can determine the hourly cost by simply dividing her daily rate by the number of hours in a work-day (normally 8).

Your childcare provider might also provide you with a monthly rate which you can multiply by 12 for the year then divide by the number of working days in the year to calculate the daily rate.
Home childcare is generally classified as either part-time or full-time care depending on the number of hours and/or days that you require care your little one. Full-time is generally 40 hours per week whereas part-time is anything below that (often between 15-35 hours).

Vacation for you and the childcare provider.

  • depending on the agreement you have made with your childcare provider, you should pay her the agreed monthly amount whether or not you take vacation.
  • if she decides to take vacation however, she should not charge you for her services during the time that she is absent. Some exceptions may be made around Christmas time.

Les jours fériés

You should pay your home childcare provider for statutory holidays regardless of whether she watches your children on those days, since most childcare providers charge a monthly fee, this makes it very easy. Whether she will care for your children on statutory holidays or not is something you should discuss with her in advance. Perhaps you have these days off and wish to spend some quality time with your little munchkins!
