Minimum level of training in Early Childhood Development

All registered home childcare providers must have taken at least one course in Early Childhood Education (ECE). The requirements in order to be certified are different in each province with some requiring more. Most classes are between 30 and 120 hours.

Again this is just the minimum requirement. Many licensed childcare providers have a higher level of education and training in ECE and ECD because they are committed to childcare as their profession. This is one of the main advantages of the licensed childcare provider

First aid training

In addition to their training in Early Childhood Development, are licensed home childcare providers must have basic first aid training so that they know how to proceed in the case of a medical emergency. Registered home daycares must also have fully-stocked first-aid kits on site. Here are some examples of the skills they must learn:

  • CPR & airway emergencies
  • wound care,
  • in the event of poisoning,
  • how to keep children safe.
Registered home daycares must also have fully-stocked first-aid kits on site.

Criminal background check

Before they are registered, childcare provider's are required to submit to a criminal background check in order to be sure that they do not have a history of violence or abuse with children or otherwise.
