How to pay my nanny her wages? paying nanny

Methods of payment for the nanny, payslips... help!

You're an employer now and you must pay your nanny her wages either biweekly or monthly and pay the monthly payroll remittances to the government.

For now, you know nothing? Don't worry, in a few months, stat pay and net payable won't seem like such scary words…

Your first obligation, the payment of wages. This payment is made biweekly monthly, at a fixed date (determined in the employment contract). The salary may be paid by check, bank transfer, or cash.

Attention: The payment must be addressed to your nanny, with her name on it (not her husbands!).

In parallel, you will perform the following administrative procedures:
- The remittance of payroll deductions
- The creation of a payslip

Your nanny's payslip

You will need to provide your nanny with a payslip with every payment. Both the employer and the employee will need to keep these payslips for their records.

Content of the payslip

You must include:

  • the employee's name
  • the employer's name

With reference to the hours of work

  • pay period dates (biweekly, monthy)
  • payment date
  • number of hours worked

Concerning the pay

  • hourly rate of pay
  • wages (gross/net)
  • overtime wages
  • vacation pay earned/payed out
  • statutory holiday pay
  • income tax deductions
  • CPP and EI contributions
  • room and board deductions for a live-in nanny
  • a summary of the deductions and contributions year-to-date

And for avoiding any conflict

  • the method of payment: cheque, bank transfer set on such and such date.

 Payroll software

Want to save yourself considerable hassle? Consider purchasing a payroll software or program. It is foolproof! Not only does it do all of the calculations for you but you can print out cheques and payslips directly, T4s and it updates the tax tables annually. And lucky you, it's not an expensive investment either.
