Disadvantages of nanny sharing disadvantages nanny sharing

Sharing the nanny. What are the major disagreements?

As with all forms of care that exist, nanny sharing, even though it is very attractive, still has some drawbacks.

This childcare solution may not be suitable for some families.
The viability of this solution often depends on the logistics of course but also the state of mind of the two families and the nanny. It should only be considered under certain conditions.

In which cases is it preferable to give up on the idea of nanny sharing?

It would be dangerous to blindly push on if straightaway:

  • You live far away from everything and you're aware that the possibility of finding a family and a nanny who will agree to travel more than 10 kilometers is minimal,
  • You're not very enthusiastic about a stranger interfering in your home,
  • Your home is not large enough to accommodate other children.

Some drawbacks all the same

You meet the right conditions and you want try your luck? Here are some drawbacks that you should still be aware of.

  • Unlike daycares or licensed home childcare providers, a nanny is not necessarily qualified in the field of early childhood, make sure she is capable of caring for your children,
  • Adding "umbrella" insurance to your home insurance policy is highly recommended, should any accident involving the nanny or the other family's children occur in your home,
  • In the case of illness of your employee, you must find an emergency solution,
  • The flexibility of hours is reduced since the childcare depends on a second family,
  • The organization holidays can be difficult to manage so that it satisfies the two families and the employee,
  • The relationship between the parents should be healthy at the risk of having to interrupt nanny sharing agreement along the way,
  • Finding a family that has the same educational principles and the same lifestyle can prove to be tougher than expected,
  • You'll have to arrange your home to accommodate children of another family. Moving umbrellas from one home to another is sometimes irritating, so you might have to have extras available.

Carlos Portocarrero, contributer to Wise Bread, share his thoughts and experiences about the pro and cons of nanny sharing which you can read here.

The moment that can be the most complicated to manage will undoubtedly be the hiring process. It will be accompanied by all of the decisions about the alternation of homes and determination of the tasks that the nanny will need to do.
But it is important to take time to ensure all parties are satisfied!
