Leave and pay for a nanny, find out all you need to know. pay nanny

The pay and absences of my nanny.

By choosing care by a nanny in your home, you impose on yourself administrative and legal formalities that can be heavy. They center around the issues of compensation and leave of your nanny.
By managing the pay calculation and absences (including vacations) of your nanny, the following terms will no longer be unknown to you:

SIN: Social insurance number - number assigned by the government, required for all workers.
Payroll remittances: Employee and employer payroll deductions that are paid monthly by the employer.
T4: Annual summary of wages earned, tax and benefits paid provided to the employee for tax purposes.
Vacation pay: Wages equal to 2 weeks, paid either as 4% on every paycheque or when the employee takes her vacation.

Why declare my nanny's earnings?

These declarations are used to identify parents as employers and the nanny as an employee to her access to social benefits and pay her income tax.

The process of declaring is not overly difficult and doing so can save you lots of headaches in the future. Once you have set up an account with the CRA, all that's left to do is calculate the payroll deductions and remit them monthly.

Reporting your nanny's wages avoids undeclared work which could lead to prosecution for undocumented labor.

How to manage the pay and vacation or leave of my nanny?

Here we are in the thick of it. Top-nanny's guide will accompany you throughout these administrative procedures.

How to pay my nanny's wages?

As a boss, your first obligation to your employee is paying her in accordance with the employment contract. When do I pay my nanny? Using which method of payment? Should I make a payslip?

Vacation and time-off, paid or unpaid, for a nanny

Your nanny could be absent for several reasons: her 2 weeks paid vacation of course, but also due to illness, family emergencies, sick child ... How is paid vacation accumulated? How is it paid? Are other forms of leave also paid?

Raises, bonuses.. how to reward my nanny?

Apart from paying your the minimum which is required of you, you may want to occasionally reward  your nanny or increase her salary. An end-of-the-year bonus, gift vouchers ... several possibilities are available, you just need to follow the due processes.
