Hello, my name's Aarti. I'm 22 years old, currently in university at Laurentian. I'm in my fourth year of the concurrent education program. I'm working on a specialization in English and a double minor in religious studies and women's studies.
I'm going to be a teacher because I love children. As the oldest child of a very large family, I've learned a lot about caring for babies and young children, and done more than my share of unpaid babysitting! Various education and psychology courses that I've taken in university have also expanded my skills in understanding and effectively "negotiating" with young children. I've also had practical experience in classrooms. I've worked in a kindergarten class and grades 2, 4, 5, 9, and 11. I've helped out in a resource room, working with students who have various learning disabilities and/or developmental issues. I've also volunteered with the Learning Disabilities Association of Sudbury as a mentor/coach/tutor to a grade 7 student.
I'm extremely patient and compassionate when it comes to children. My approach with kids is energetic and fun. I encourage them to speak their minds with me so that I can know what their needs are. If at any time I'm not meeting their needs or they are unhappy for any reason, most children feel comfortable enough to let me know because we have that open dialogue, and hopefully a trusting relationship.
I don't pretend to be a master chef, but I am capable of providing a nutritious and appealing snack or meal, if I am needed to. As an aspiring teacher, I can obviously help out with homework, as well. I'm fairly organized and good at planning fun activities to avoid having unstructured time. Of course, the kinds of activities I would plan would be dependent on the age and personality of the child that I'm caring for.
